A future of scarse resources

We are heading into a future where there will be a scarcity of several resources. Here are two, one obvious, and one perhaps less.

Energy. We have had more or less unlimited access to energy: oil, gas and nuclear for for about 100 years. This is about to end. They either run out, or we will finally understand that we cannot use them as before.

Carbon. Carbon is the central carrier of energy today, in different compounds. If we want to continue with this excellent energy carrier (together with hydrogen - but we have allot of that in water) we have to get it from somewhere. The closed circle is that it has to come from the atmosphere, because that is where it ends up when we combust it. Thus, we have to find ways of capturing carbon from the atmosphere and bind it to an energy carrier. The obvious solution: plants. They take the solar energy and convert it to hydrocarbons that we can transport and combust.

However, there is a problem with plants. They are too slow in binding the atmospheric carbon for the pace with which we need to consume energy today. So, we have two choices:

1. Find a solution that can bind solar energy into a carbon carrier faster

2. Reduce our consumption of energy.

On one is particular keen on or happy about the second options. That leaves new technology.

The future of building space ships

Build a rocket
Launch it with a huge 3d printer head and beams to support 3d metal printing
Assemble the printer
Melt the rocket
Print the space ship using the rocket as material
